Don bought a car for $15,794, with 6% tax included. What was the price of the car without tax? (answer: x = $14,900)

I tried to set the problem up as:

x = 15,794 - (.06)(15,794)

But that only subtracted six percent from the total and does not give me the price without tax. Again, I need help setting up the problem.

Thank you!

Your equation is incorrect.

You don't know the original price of the car.

Let x=the original cost of the car. Then you want to add 6% tax to that and total 15,794.

\(\displaystyle x+0.06x=15794\)

solve for x.
