driver rating system

I need help And I hope I've come to the right place...
Quick background info... I run a Radio Control race series in Southern California... we are a group of about 50 guys... and I want to find a system to rate each driver...
For example, driver "A" might be rated 4.5 while driver "B" who isn't as good might be rated 2.8... just some kind of way so that each driver can see how they match up
to each other...

some races have only 10 drivers participating, while bigger races will have 35...
some drivers will race every race ... while others may only attend one or two...
Obviously every race there will be a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on...

Any idea's or help will be greatly appreciated...

OK... so don't laugh.... it took me 20 minutes to get my head around that still not sure if I truly got it... But Now I have a system I think...

say race 1 has 15 participants... 1st place will receive 15 points divided by 2 = 7.5 points
race 2 that same driver comes in 3rd place with only 10 races total, he will get 8 points divided by 2 = 4 ... 4 + 7.5 divided by 2 ( races ) = 5.75
race 3 that driver comes in last place , he gets 1 point divided by 2 = .5 ... .5 + 4 + 7.5 divided by 3 ( races ) = 4

and to also incorporate recency into the formula, I could say remove 5% for each race missed....

race 4 that driver doesn't show up... 4 - .2 = 3.8

Race 5 that driver wins the race with 20 participants he gets 20 points divided by 2 = 10 ..... 7.5 + 4 + .5 -.2 + 10 = 21.8 divided by 4 = 5.45

does all this make sense ? also why am I dividing by 2 ?
I wish there was a excel spread sheet that could do this ...LOL
If anyone can make this on a spread sheet I will pay

I'm also thinking with this system you are rewarded more points when you have more competition and less when there is less...
