Which problem situation matches the equation below?
x - 2.4 = 7.6

A. Alice lives 7.6 miles from school. Alex lives 2.4 miles from school. What is the average distance the two students live from school?

B. Burt jogged for 7.6 miles. Barbara jogged for 2.4 miles. How many more miles did Burt jog than Barbara?

C. Cathy and Carl went to eat. Their bill totaled $7.60. Cathy paid $2.40. How much did Carl pay?

D. On Saturday, Donny played video games for 7.6 hours and Danita played for 2.4 hours. How many total hours did Donny and Danita play video games?

Run through them one at a time.

A) It won't be A. Averaging is going to involve division, and you see no such thing in the equation.

B) We want to find how many more miles Burt jogged than Barbara. It obviously will not be this one either. Why not? Well, doing the math, the answer is 10. Burt cannot have ran more miles than Barbara than he actually ran (7.6).

I've narrowed it down to either C or D for you. See if you can find why one of the others does not work.[/b]
