Trying to help my son with his math. We are not solving for answer, just writing equivalent expressions. Problem: $44 plus a 20% tip. Now the first one was easy. $44+(44x.20). But the second one, (from the answer key) I do not understand $44 x 1.2. Where did the 1.2 come from?

Factor 44 from the sum: [MATH]44 + 44\times.20 = 44(1 + .20) = 44(1.20)[/MATH].

To put it in nonalgebraic terms, adding 20% to an amount results in 120% of the amount (which is 1.20 times the amount).
