Does your son know what slope intercept form is?
It is y=mx+b

If you have an equation ay-b=3x and need to write it in slope intercept form then you do the following.

ay-b=3x. add b to both sides.
ay = 3x + b. Now divide both sides by a.
y = 3x/a + b/a
