Exterior Angle Theorem

I have a bunch of proofs that have this theorem but im not really too sure why. For example, i have a proof that looks like this:

1) Triangle ABC intersects AC at D 1) Given

2) the measure of angle 1 > the measure of angle 2
2) Exterior Angle Inequality Theorem

3) the measure of angle 2 > the measure of angle 3
3) Exterior Angle Inequality proof

4)therefore the measure of angle 1 > the measure of angle 3
4)Transitive Property of Inequality

Your book has multiple proofs of one Theorem...? And you're asking us why the book was written that way...?
