For what values of a and b will the parabola y = x^2 +ax +b be tangent to the curve y = x^3 at the point (1,1).

since the two curves are tangent at (1,1) ...

1. the curves are equal at x = 1

2. the curves have the same slope at x = 1 (i.e., their derivatives are equal at x = 1)
