here is the question: I am confused about the steps I need to follow to be able to complete this question some explanation will be appreciated :)

In a Multiple - choice examination of 25 questions, four marks are
given for each correct answer and two marks are deducted for each
wrong answer. One mark is deducted for any question which is not
attempted.
A candidate attempts q questions and gets c correct.
a) Write down an expression for the candidate's total mark in terms of
q and c.
b) James attempts 22 questions and scores 55 marks. Write down and
solve an equation for the number of questions which James gets right

So not attempted is 25 - q ; loses 1 mark for these

> two marks are deducted for each wrong answer.
Number of wrong answers are q - c ; loses 2 marks for each of these

> four marks are given for each correct answer
So marks obtained before penalties are 4c (4 for each correct)

Putting all that together:
Total marks = 4c - 2(q - c) - 1(25 - q)

I'll let you simplify this.

 Attempt all of the problems, but answer none of them. That way, you won't lose anything.

thnk u dat really helps
Nancy, start NOW using proper English; that should be: Thank you, that really helps.
You will not regret it, guaranteed

This comment is not in regards to this specific problem, but if you are not marking
an answer at all, then I'd say that that is itself a wrong answer. Any scoring systems
that don't treat the lack of an answer as the same as giving a "wrong" answer
should be discarded, in my opinion.
