I have recently started taking study classes for my G.E.D. and math is, so far, my worst subject so my teacher gave me math homework. I'm on the chapter about fractions right now and so far I have done alright. But, now I'm on the section on subtracting mixed numbers and I am very confused. It tells me to regroup the fraction if the one being subtracted is of greater value and turn it into an improper fraction and thats where I get lost. I dont see my teacher again until Wednesday but I dont want to leave this that long. Can someone please help me.

3 1/3 - 1 2/3 and the directions say " Subtract the fractions; if the fraction being subtracted is the greater fraction, then regroup the top mixed number and change the top fraction to an improper fraction." I just don't understand how to do it, more I don't remember. I've been out of school for about 5 years and I was bad at math when I was in school. If you would like you can e mail me at superbitch4202006@yahoo.com I know its not approprite but I havent had a chance to change it. My apoligizes.

to regroup the fraction

I'm not sure what "regroup the fraction" means.

turn [a mixed number] into an improper fraction

Click HERE and check out lessons #7 and #13.

If you like watching short videos, HERE is one on mixed numbers and improper fractions from the Arithmetic library at http://www.khanacademy.org

If you get stuck on any lesson, example, or exercise, please post it here with your work or specific question(s).

Cheers 8-)
