Gaussian coordinates

I am learning about these in Einstein's "Popular Exposition of SR and GR"

Can anyone suggest where I might learn a bit about them on the web as I am having a hard time looking it up.

For those unfamiliar it seems to involve coordinate systems on curved surfaces and from the notation involved it may have some connection to tensors (might be wrong there)
 
Thanks for that suggestion but no I don't think that link of yours really goes into it.

This is a discussion I have now found which tackles the issues but it is not for the faint hearted or poorly prepared (ie myself apparently :) )

Well you certainly need help from a physicist and not a mathematician. I could help with Gaussian integers so I knew that not what you meant hence
the link. But you need a science site not one for mathematics.
 
Thanks then. The AE quote you are showing (that's called a "signature"?) seems quite a propos ;)
