Hi

How do I find out x?

x
- + 6 = x
3

I know how to do it if the number after = isn't a pronumeral.

But I can't do this one because it is a pronumeral.

Any help?

Today, I learned the definition of "pronumeral".

Hello Gubrae:

There's more than one way, but here are the steps that I would use for solving x/3 + 6 = x.

  1. Multiply both sides of the equation by 3 to clear the fraction[/*:m:3e7157sf]
  2. Subtract x from both sides[/*:m:3e7157sf]
  3. Divide both sides by the coefficient of x[/*:m:3e7157sf]

If you've never had to subtract something like 3x - x, then let us know. I'm guessing that you'll be able to understand my steps, but if you cannot carry them out, then post a reply. Please show some work, if you can.

Cheers

Re: Problem

To eliminate the denominator of a fraction appearing in an equation, multiply both sides of the equation by the denominator of the fraction. Then your objective is to get all the terms containing variables (pronumerals) on one side of the equation and all constants on the other side. Simplify, where possible. Finally, do what is necessary to end up with the variable having a coefficient of one. To achieve that, you may have to divide both sides of the equation by the coefficient of the "pronumeral".
