How many half 1m cubes fit in one box?
0.5 meter cubed
logically 4 half a meters cubed in side one 1m box
but half a meter cubed is 0.125 which would mean 64

64 half meter cubes would be 4 meters cubed
8 half a meters cubed in side one 1m box (correction)

512 half meter cubes would be 8 meters cubed (correction)

i think I figured it out I was using the cubed result as a side measurement rather than a total volume

It's not quite clear what you have been saying, but putting cubes 1/2 meter on a side, in a box 1 meter on a side, you can make 2 layers, each 2 by 2 cubes, for a total of 8 cubes in the box; and the volume of each half-meter cube is (1/2)^3 = 1/8, so 8 of them make 1 cubic meter, as expected.
