this is the problem thanks:

width of a rectange is 75% of its length.
the perimeter of the rectangle is 148 centimeters.
find the dimension of the rectangle!!!

i need the equation to solve.

thank you!!!

System of equations, right?

Let W = Width
Let L = Length

{W = 0.75L
{2W + 2L = 148

Now solve using substitution to get the length and width of your rectangle in cm.

Since this is pre-algebra, the student has almost certainly not seen systems of equations, unfortunately. We'll need to find a non-algebraic method of solution.

Here's how my ten-year-old suggests you approach this:

Seventy-five percent is three-fourths, or three of four parts.

Since the width w is 75% of the length L, then, given L is four "parts", how many "parts" is w?

Draw the rectangle. Mark off the four "parts" on the two longs sides for the length L. How many parts do you mark off on the two shorter sides?

What is your total number of parts?

Given that the perimeter is 148 centimeters, how many centimeters are in each "part"?

So what is the length? What is the width?

If you get stuck, please reply showing all of your steps so far. Thank you! :D

Eliz.
