You can either rearrange the order and then combine like terms or simply combine like terms as you go. 4a[sup:1q2wcvz0]2[/sup:1q2wcvz0] + a[sup:1q2wcvz0]2[/sup:1q2wcvz0] = 5a[sup:1q2wcvz0]2[/sup:1q2wcvz0] 2a - 5a = -3a -3 - 5 = -8.
