The numbers are: 95, 59, 39, 42, total=235

What is the total percent of 95 out of all the numbers? How do I figure it out?

I have no teacher. This is a question on a study guide I have for a fire test Im getting ready for and I need to know what are the steps to find out the percentage.

Q: What percent of total fires in 2000 occurred in residential areas?

year 2000:
Residential95
Industrial59
Commercial39
Highway42
Total:235

So out of total 235 fires - 95 were residential fire.

Lets do a different problem.

In a party of male and female there were 55 males. Total number of people were 132. What was the percent of males?

percent of males = (No. of males)/(Total people) = 55/132 * 100 % = 41.67%

Attack your problem the same way.

Here's how I think of it....

Lets say I have 15,24,89,54, and 35 out of 217 and would like to see what each one's percentage is....

15: 15/217=.069*100%= 6.9%
24: 24/217=.111*100%= 11.1%
89: 89/217=.41*100%= 41%
54: 54/217=.249*100%= 24.9%
35: 35/217=.161*100%= 16.1%

Now you can check yourself to make sure you did not make any mistakes by adding up all the percentages and making sure they meet 100%

Ex.
6.9+11.1+41+24.9+16.1= 100%!!! And your all done!!!

This helps a little. I see how I get the answer but I cant use a calculator so I need to be able to figure this out by hand and the only way I seem to get close to those numbers is to do long division but to divide the littlest number by the biggest number, which is not always the easiest to do. Am I wrong or is there an easier way to do it by hand?

There are free internet calculators that you may be able to use - e.g. -
