Given the system below, solve for y:
2x + y - z = 7
3x - 2y + z = -4
x + 7y - 4z = 27

y = -2 is this right?
 
You can't tell if y is right till you know x & z so you can try all three in each of the original equations.

The exercise only asked for the value of y (perhaps you were supposed to use Cramer's Rule?), and I think the other poster missed that restriction.

Since you weren't asked for x or z, you don't need to find them. :D

Use the same method you used for finding only the value of y.
