Okay I'm a junior in advanced algebra and I need help on a problem, it seems simple but I for some reason don't uderstand it, it's:

A youth choir won a state-level competition and decided to raise money to attend the national competition. One find-raising project involved selling Vidalia onions. For each 25-pound bag of onions sold, the choir raised $1.75. How many bags must the choir sell to raise $341.25?

My problem is is that I know what the answer is b/c this is just a practice test to prepare for the real one, and the teacher gave us the answers to check our work but copying wouldn't help me any, but I don't kow like how to set it up and the formula I would use to get the answer.

How many bags would they need to sell in order to make $1.75?

How many bags would they need to sell in order to make $3.50?

How many bags would they need to sell in order to make $5.25?

How many bags would they need to sell in order to make $7.00?

What operation did you use to find the answers to the above questions? Use that same process to find the answer to the given question.

Eliz.

I still dont' get it!

See that's the thing I for some reason am not getting it. I don't understand what formula I would need to use to solve it for any amount of money.

I'm guessing you are "over-complicating" this question.

The profit on one bag is $1.75.

They need to raise $341.25

Let n = number of bags they sell

number of bags * profit on one bag = total raised
n * 1.75 = 341.25

You don't NEED algebra or a "formula" for this....it is basically just an arithmetic problem.

Your problem is as simple as:
if I sell 1 apple for a dollar, how many apples must I sell to get $5 ?
There must be something missing....
