Hey all. I've been given this solution to an economics problem but can't figure out where the 0.51 in the second line came from.

Can anyone help explain what's occurred to get to the second line?

I think you are just staring at the solution instead of using paper and pencil. Get a pencil and paper and work with these steps.These are basic algebraic operations:

0.5 * (Y -100)/100 - (0.1 * 0.1)

=0.5 * (Y -100)/100 - (0.01)

= ( 0.5 * Y - 50)/100 - (0.01)

= ( 0.5 * Y - 50)/100 - 1/100

and continue....
