On the 2 days before a swim meet, Jesse swam a total of 2,050 meters. The second day, she swam 250 meters more than the first day. How many meters did she swim on each day?

x = 1st day:
x + x+250 = 2050

Solve for x.

That's quite basic Alysia: what was your problem with it?

In case you haven't covered variables yet, here's how my ten-year-old suggests doing this:

A beleaguered mom said:
You have two days, with one day being 250 more than the other. That means you have two equal parts, plus another 250. So subtract the extra from the total, and then divide by 2 to find the equal parts. Then you find add the extra back in to get the number for the second day.
