Hi dear tutors. I find myself at a loss here.
A park is 300 yds by 500 yds. There is a 4ft-wide walking path going around the entire perimeter of the park. The rest of the park is green space. How much green space is there in the park?
I need your hints here.
what I have so far:
Area of the park
A= l*w
A= 300 yds * 500 yds
A=150000 yds^2

4ft wide walking path going around the perimeter of the park
the great FIND : How much green space is there in the park?

I'd need a hint to get me started. I'm not getting this.

What are the dimensions of the green space inside the path? You may want to draw a picture.

You haven't answered my question! What are the dimensions of the green space inside? How long? How wide? You can answer either in yards or in feet.

dimension of the park 300 yds by 500 yds
in feet would be,
900 by 1500

there's a walk path that measures 4ft
so I gather I have to deduct 4 ft from each side of the length and width of the park, right?
900ft- 2(4ft) * 1500ft - 2(4ft)
Is this correct so far?.

Another Ill-posed problem. Nowhere it states that the shape of the park is rectangular.

So the area of the park CANNOT be determined, without some assumption/s.

okay, let's assume it is rectangular. Is my setup at post#6 correct?

Yes, but you don't need to ask. You asked only for a hint, and I gave it. Do the rest without asking for help at every step; I know you can do it.

No. You wrote:
900ft- 2(4ft) * 1500ft - 2(4ft) ........ this wll compute to .......... 900 ft - 12000 ft^2 - 8 ft ........ numbers with different unit and cannot be simplified further.
It should be:

(900 - 2*4) * (1500 - 2*4) ft^2.......................................those parentheses are SUPER important.

(900-8) * ( 1500-8)ft^2
=892 *1492
=1330864 ft^2
there is 1330864 ft^2 of green area.
