I need help with sixth grade math

The "Mixed Fraction" may be the worst construct of all time. Make it an "Improper Fraction" and you'll be almost done. Don't let the word "Improper" fool you. Excepet for comparing magnitude, it is the best form for just about everything.

(-2/3) + (3 and 1/3) = (-2/3) + (9/3 + 1/3) = (-2/3) + (10/3) = (-2 + 10)/3 = 8/3

I think we're done. Sadly, someone may want that nasty mixed fraction. Fine 2 and 2/3.

-2/3 plus 3 and 1/3

what you need to do is -2/3 use the 1/3 from the mixed fraction. you still have -1/3. now what you do is take 1/3 off of 3. turn 3 into 2 and 2/3. if you need 2 2/3 as an improper fraction nmultiply 2 times the denominator (2 x 3 = 6) and add 2 (6 + 2 = 8) keep the denominator 3. 8 is the numerator = 8/3 I'm in the 6th grade and I just had this problem myself. it is another way to get the answer
