it is a linear equation. i need to solve it using the addition method could someone please help me with the steps to how to do this?

it is:

-X+Y=2
X+Y=4

-X+Y=2
X+Y=4

Since the x variables cancel out just solve for y as 2y=6.

Then input the y value back into the original equation to obtain the value for x.

by addition method could they mean that you have to add each equation to eliminate variables? I don't really see any other way of solving other than that.

but thats the substitution method i need to use the addition method

the addition method is exactly what ochocki did.

add 'em up ...

-x + y =2
x +y = 4
-----------
0+2y = 6
