This is not advanced algebra. Why is anyone calling it that?
The "f" is a convention to indicate a function. Its argument tells what to substitute or what variable is of interest.
Understanding function notation is very important. It is a fundamentally useful communication device.
If f(x) = 2*x - 4,
then f(3) = 2*3 - 4
so also f(1/2) = 2*(1/2) - 4
so also f(dog) = 2*(dog) - 4
so also f(house) = 2*(house) - 4
so also f(f(x)) = 2*(f(x)) - 4
Here's an excellent example of a notation problem. Have you studied the "Order of Operations? I presume you have. That being the case, please rewrite your problem statement so it says what you mean. (Hint: More parentheses). After that, substitute away and show us what you get.
