[imath]\delta[/imath] cannot be a function of [imath]x[/imath]. One way to get around this is to put a temporary clamp on [imath]\delta[/imath] for example [imath]\delta<1[/imath]. Now since [imath]\lvert x-1 \rvert < \delta < 1[/imath] or [imath]-1 < x-1 < 1[/imath] then [imath]1 < x+1 < 3[/imath] so [imath]\lvert x+1 \rvert < 3[/imath] and then you can continue.
