Look at the figure carefully!

For the bottom balance:

How much weight on the right pan = y + y + y + y =4y

How much weight on the left pan = x +x = 2x

Since balance is in equilibrium, those must be equal.

What about 3x = 9? From my knowledge, it seems like the equation is 3x+9=(2x+4y) ................edited

How did you get that? That is incorrect!

You said:

from the upper balance.....3x+9=(2x+4y) ............................. CORRECT

and I showed you

from the lower balance..... 2x = 4y

Now you have two equations and two unknowns - solve for x and y
