How do you get the answer without using a calculator? Am I missing something???

Quite likely you are expected to recognize that 3.2 is approximately the square root of 10, so that its base-10 log is 0.5.

It's too bad they don't explain that (unless there have been previous examples in which they did, and they trust you to remember).
