Hi again!

I don't want to be one to beg for assistance but upon attempting one question for hours on end and making no progress I'm kinda desperate for advice/formula/methods.

The question is attached below, it is part of a third year Computer Science degree, however i find the resources provided to us are not sufficient to answer it.
