Your methodology is right .
Here is a second , much longer method for the problem 2 , using Newton's laws and the equations of linear uniformly accelerated motion.

If it asked you to find the accelerations as well, you could use linear uniformly accelerated motion equations and the relation between the two speeds you already have found to find the acceleration without even messing with forces and Newton's laws!!
