These:

100

E 2i

i = 51

(supposed to look like a greek lettering E...)

The way that my teacher set up the problem for us in the example looked like this:

S sub 50 = 50/2 (51 + 100)

What I don't understand is why is 50 used instead of 51? I know there's a reason...

How many numbers are there "from 51 to 100" (including both the numbers)

Which IS including 51 and 100...

Well no...it is NOT 49.

To convince your self of this fact, I suggest that this one time you write down all of the integers, starting with 51 and ending with 100...and ACTUALLY COUNT THEM!

In fact, it might have been a good idea to do that before you came here asking this question....

1 - 10 <<<< How many numbers?

11 - 20 <<<< How many numbers?

21 - 30 <<<< How many numbers?
.
.
.
91- 100 <<<< How many numbers?

Now tell me

51 - 100 <<<< How many numbers?
