I am soooooooooo confused. Can you help with this?

How do I get rid of the () in this equation?

8x-(x-5)>x+17

If it helps, put a "1" in front of the parentheses:

. . . . .8x - (x - 5) > x + 17

. . . . .8x - 1(x - 5) > x + 17

Multiply through, and combine "like" terms. Then solve as usual.
