the martinez family is planning to tile their kitchen. the dimensions of the kitchen are 15 feet by 8 feet. each tile has an area of one square foot and the cost of each tile is $4.20, how much will it cost to tile the kitchen?

Instead of asking for the cost to tile a kitchen floor, I think they want just the cost of the tiles themselves.

Think of the kitchen floor as a rectangle.

The length is 15, and the width is 8.

"Area" is a way of describing how many tiles are needed to cover the floor.

There is a formula for calculating the area of a rectangle.

Area = Length x Width

When you multiply the length of the kitchen floor by it's width, you'll know how many tiles are needed.

Then, multiply the number of tiles by 4.2 (because each tile costs $4.20).

Does this make sense? 8-)
