1. Sabrina has designed a rectangular painting that measures 50 ft in length and 40 feet in width. Alfed has also designed a rectangular painting, but it measures x feet on each side. When x=3, what is the area of Alfred's painting?

2. A rectangular swimming pool is 20 feet long and 10 feet wide. It is surrounded by a fence that is x feet from each side of the pool. Write a expressions for the length, width, and area of the fenced region.

3. Circle A has a radius of (x+4) units. A large circle, B has radius of (x+5) units. use the formula A = π × r`2 to write an expression for the difference in the areas of the circles. leave your answer in terms of PI. then use 3.14 for PI to approximate to the nearest whole number the difference in the areas when x=10

4. This week Leo worded (x+4) hours at a pizzeria. He is paid (x-4) dollars per hour. Leo's friend Frankie worked the same # of hours, but he is paid (x-2) dollars per hour. Write an expression for the total amount paid to the two workers. Then find the total amount if x = 12 dollars.

To learn the basic geometric formulas (which they were supposed to have taught you, and which you should memorize), try here. For general advice, plus worked examples, on how to do geometric word problems, try here.

1. Sabrina has designed a rectangular painting that measures 50 ft in length and 40 feet in width. Alfed has also designed a rectangular painting, but it measures x feet on each side. When x=3, what is the area of Alfred's painting?
Draw a picture of his "rectangle". Label the sides with their dimensions. Apply the formula for the area of this shape, given these dimensions.

2. A rectangular swimming pool is 20 feet long and 10 feet wide. It is surrounded by a fence that is x feet from each side of the pool. Write a expressions for the length, width, and area of the fenced region.
Draw a picture of the inner rectangle, and label its dimensions. Draw the outer rectangle, and label the width between the inner and outer rectangles. Use this information to figure out expressions for the dimensions of the outer rectangle. (Hint: Add, and simplify.) here Apply the appropriate formula to find the expression for the area. (Hint: Multiply.) here

Where are you stuck in plugging the given information into the given formula, and following the steps?

If you are paid $10/hour and you work three hours, how much are you paid?

If you are paid $11/hour and you work two hours, how much are you paid?

If you are paid $15/hour and you work four hours, how much are you paid?

How did you do the above computations? Apply the same process to this exercise.

If you get stuck, please reply with a clear listing of your thoughts and efforts so far. Thank you! ;)
