In the case of Wayne Williams (Detroit, 1979) the fibre evidence was crucial to the prosecution case. There were 2 fibers that made up the case, one from a Luxaire English Olive carpet (the same as found in Williams’ house) and the second from the carpet of a pre-1973 Chevrolet (a car that Williams owns). The odds that they would appear randomly were given as 1 in 7792 and 1 in 3828 respectively. What are the odds that the fibres would be found on the victim randomly?
How could you use the Bayesian method to estimate the probability of Williams being guilty using this evidence?
