Did you read "Read before Posting"?

And did you take the trouble to draw a square, then 2 parallel lines inside it?

Other than the obvious solution, there is another solution - where the cut-lines are parallel to one of the diagonals.

Hello, hottielous!

A square is divided into three pieces of equal area by two parallel cuts.
The distance between the parallel lines is 6 inches.
What is the side length of this square ?

Code:
      *-----------* -
      |           | ?
      * - - - - - * -
      |           | 6
      * - - - - - * -
      |           | ?
      *-----------* -
      : - - ? - - :

I'll have my friends at MIT work on it and get back to you in a week or two.
