Hey Guys,

This question is confusing me a lot. It's telling me that those two angles are complementary so I have angle MNP + angle PNQ = 90

The answer in the back of the book is x = 143.

I can get 143 by adding 50 + 90 = 143 haha. But I've tried subtracting 92 - 53 and adding the answer to 92 and what not. It's just confusing me. Sounds simple but I don't know how to set this up.

How is 50 + 90 equal to 143? What does "haha" mean?

Why? What do you mean by "what not"?

What did you get as the measure of angle PNQ? How?

Given that the sum of the two angles must be 90, from what value should you subtract the measure of angle PNQ?

What value do you get when you do this subtraction? ;)

Lol! sorry, I meant 53 + 90 = 143. Well, I heard that the answer is 53 + 90 = 143. The thing is I just don't get it. Why do we add from the 53? Do we ignore the 92 in the middle?

I was getting so confused because of the image. You see, angle MNQ looks almost like a 90degree right angle judging from those black lines. I was so confused because of this.. I thought to myself, how can an almost 90 degree angle be a 143? I notice now that 143 IS m because the whole protractor is 180 degrees total. And m looks around the 143 mark. :D

since angle MNP and angle PNQ are complimentary, angle MNQ = 90 degrees
angle PNQ = 92 degrees- 53 degrees = 39 degrees
angle MNP = 90 degrees - 39 degrees = 51 degrees
x = 92 degrees + 51 degrees = 143 degrees
