Trying to solve an algebra quadratic equation

Solution for X2 - 16 = -6x

step 1 ? : X2 + 6X - 16 = 0

how do I factor this to solve for the answer -8, 2

Thank you

Which of the following methods have you been taught:

  1. a-c factorization
  2. Completing squares
  3. Quadratic formula

x2 + 6x - 16 = 0

how do I factor this to solve for the answer -8, 2

Hi.

This polynomial has the form x^2 + Bx + C

In this case (where the leading coefficient is A=1), you're looking for two integers whose product is C and whose sum is B.

In other words, if we call these two numbers integer1 and integer2, we need:

(integer1)*(integer2) = -16

integer1 + integer2 = 6

Then, the polynomial's factorization takes the form (x-integer1)*(x-integer2).

Can you think of two factors of -16 that add to make 6? :)

Yes, I understand now. Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction: :)

X^2 - 16 = -6x

X^2 + 6x - 16 = 0

(X + 8) ( X - 2) = 0

(X + 8) = 0; X = -8
(X - 2) = 0; X = 2

-8, 2 as the answer
