Quick question...very important.

5X-8=(x/2)+7

5x -8 -7 = x/2

2(5x -8-7) =x

now expand and gather terms to solve

That doesn't make sense to me...

I would do something like

5x-8=(x/2)+7
+8 +8

So:
5x=(x/2)+16

then what?

Take apm's hint: Combine "like" terms. You need to get all the x-stuff together on one side. So how are you going to move a +(1/2)x to the other side...?

Eliz.

many ways to solve a problem...

5x=(x/2)+15
then take (x/2) from each side

5x -(x/2) = (x/2) -(x/2) +15

5x -x/2 =16

multiply everthing by 2

2(5x) -2(x/2) =2(15)

10 x -x =30
9x =30
x=30/9

and from the other option......
2(5x -8-7) =x

10x -30 =x
9x =30
x=30/9

to get rid of the 2 on the x/2 you can do this by multiping by 2

(x/2) times 2 = 2x/2
=x

this step has removed the 2 from the bottom.

To make the math problem true, if you multipy one item by 2 then you need to do this for all the items in the problem ie.

3 + 4 =7
multiply every item by 2
6 + 8 = 14 ...this is true.
