REVIEW OF PREREQUISITE SKILLS

By factoring. Multiply it out to check. Remember FOIL?

this is what i got....
16n2 + 8n + 1
= (16n2 +4n) (2n +1)
= 4n(4n +1) (2n +1)

thats not right? :S
the answer is suppose to be (4n+1) 2

Note: In what follows, I will be assuming that your subscripted "2" is meant to be a superscripted exponent.

How did you get that 16n2 + 8n + 1 equalled (16n2 + 4n)(2n + 1)? You should be able to see, even without multiplying things out, that your factors will produce a cubic, which isn't what you started with:

. . . . .(16n2 + 4n)(2n + 1)

. . . . .= (16n2)(2n) + (16n2)(1) + (4n)(2n) + (4n)(1)

. . . . .=32n3 + 24n2 + 4n

Please follow the instructions that were provided earlier: multiply out (4n + 1)2, and see what you get.

16n2 + 8n2 +1
= 16n2 + 4n + 4n+ 1
= (16n2 + 4n) (4n+1)
= 4(4n+1) (4n+1)
= 4(4n+1)2

example:
2w2 + 3w +1
= 2w2 +2w + 1w +1
= (2w2 + 2w) + ( 1w+1)
= 2w(w+1) + 1(w+1)
= (2w+1) (w+1)[/list]

How did "8n" (from the original equation) become "8n2"? How did "8n2" (first line) become "4n + 4n" (second line)? How did "16n2 + 4n + 4n + 1" (second line) become "64n3 + 32n2 + 4n" (third line, multiplied out)?

Please review how to factor quadratics; many lessons are available online. And also please review how to multiply polynomials, so you can follow the instructions, provided earlier, on how to confirm that (4n + 1)2 = 16n2 + 8n + 1.

Get this stuck in your head:

(a+b)2 = a2 + 2*a*b + b2

Or the other way

a2 + 2*a*b + b2 = (a+b)2

Now your problem: 16n2+ 8n + 1

Look at each term in light of that thing I told you to get stuck in your head.

16n2 = (4*n)2
1 = 1<sup>2</sup>

This leads to 16n2+ 8n + 1 = (4*n)2+ 8n + 12 = (4*n)2+ 2*(4*n)*1 + 12

I'm sorry, but I don't understand how this relates to the question at hand...?

Eliz.

i got the answer ...
16n2 + 8n + 1 ax2+bx+c
product of 16
sum of 8
4 * 4 = 16
4 + 4 = 8

=(16n2+4n) (4n+1)
=4(4n+1) + 1(4n+1)
= (4n+1)

=)
thanks for ur help!
