I am trying to simplify this problem:

4jk^2-2j^3k^4 / 2jk

Would I divide and get 2k-j^2k^3 ?

Depends; did you forget brackets: (4jk^2 - 2j^3k^4) / 2jk ?
If so you're correct; simplify further to: k(2 - j^2k^2)

Simplify polynomials

It did not have brackets. Does that make a difference in this problem?

You tell us if it makes a difference.

3+12/3 = 3 + 4 = 7

(3+12)/3 = 15/3 = 5

Your original problem statement may not have had any parentheses, but I susptect stongly that there were grouping symbols, such as a giant division sign. It doesn't always look the same when you write it "in line". You have to make it say what you want.
