Well, I guess going through one with you won't hurt...

Step1: multiply by 1000 to get rid of decimals:
5p + 1400 = 5 : follow that?
Step2: divide by 5 to simplify:
p + 280 = 1 : still with me?
Step3: subtract 280 from each side to isolate the p:
p = -279 : finished!

Now you can check if correct using original equation:
0.005p + 1.4 = 0.005
0.005*(-279) + 1.4 = 0.005
