The correct solution to 3=2 square root sign x+x is

choices
x=1 and x=3
x=1 and x=4
x=1 and x=9

Again, no clue how to even start this one. Is there a site that explains square roots in laymans terms?

Again, show like this: 2sqrt(x) + x = 3
subtract x from each side: 2sqrt(x) = 3 - x
Now square both sides, then solve for x.

Go here for an introduction to square roots:

I just don't feel you're making any progress with what we've showed you, Bethany. :? Perhaps one on one tutoring would help.

I am doing the best that I can. It isn't easy working full time, going to school full time, raising two kids and trying to learn something that I don't really like or fully understand. I have NO ONE here to help me figure this stuff out except for you guys/girls. One on one tutoring would be wonderful however I can not afford it. Maybe Denis could adopt me for a couple of weeks. ? :) My class ends 11/7 and I think it is safe to say that I will never venture into your site again. Can you put up with me until then?

I will try the purplemath site to see if that helps. In my defense, I think I have made progress. I made it through Algebra I and have moved on to this agony. The text that we have is terrible. It gives one example usually something like 1/2+1/4 and then gives you a practice question of -5/2+13/9. All they do is give you the answers, they don't show you how to do it. In Algebra I, I was using a textbook that I had since 1991. Itt explains things to you very simplying and shows you all the steps. The problem is that it is getting more advanced and that book doesn't cover this stuff. That is why I have been here so much. I apoligize.

Wow...you're quite the person.
Please keep coming back.

You guys are very sweet.

Well since all the options show x=1 for the first x, it has to be one. :idea:

According to the Purple Math site, (yes I read it) the 2 in front of the square root sign means that the x in this case is squared. 1 squared is still 1.

Knowing that 3 is the square root of 9, I am thinking that the answer is x=1 and x=9.

Let me guess, I am wrong again? :x

The site should not have led you to that conclusion, since that is not true. The expression "2 sqrt(x)" means "take the square root of x, and multiply it by 2", not "take the x inside the square root, and square it".

Sorry for the confusion.

Eliz.
