I just saw an episode of Star trek TNG from season 1 yesterday. Picard and Riker talk very briefly of trying to discover a mathematical proof from 100s of years ago. I went on the internet and found this very short story someone wrote detailing the the proof Picard was working on and a modern equivalent.

I'm just starting to fall in love with math. I hope one day I sit around and try to untangle puzzles like this.

I remember seeing an episode of TNG from 1989. Picard is talking to Riker about Fermat's Last theorem. He mentioned how it has remained unsolved even into the 24th century. The thing is, 3 years after that episode in 1992, it was solved by Andrew Wiles from Princeton. I thought that was interesting.
