ok im simplifying and i have no clue how to work this problem:
50-10/2[10-(3+4)]
i did:
3+4=7
so now i have:
50-10/2[10-(7)]
and i dont kno where to go from there.
 
you need to learn order of operations. So you added first, good. Now you must add before you multiply. So, 10-7. Then multiply and divide in that same term and subtract everything from 50
 
ok so now i have
50-10/2(3)
and when i do that i get
50-10/6
is that right??
 
Two different interpretations for the typed expression "50-10/2[10-(3+4)]":

\(\displaystyle 50 - \frac{10}{2} \cdot [10 - (3 + 4)]\)

This is the correct interpretation, and it simplifies to 50 - 15, which is 35.

\(\displaystyle 50 - \frac{10}{2 \cdot [10 - (3 + 4)]}\)

This one simplifies to 50 - 10/6, which is 145/3.

To show that the denominator is 2[10-(3+4)], we need to enclose it within grouping symbols.

50 - 10/{2[10 - (3 + 4)]}
 
ok i get it now thank u ok now i need help with simplifying this:
-10-3+5
ok this is how i do it but i need to kno if its right:
3+5=8
-10-8=-2
 
Actually, I missed another incorrect interpretation.

Your approach would have been correct, if the given expression were to have associated the 3 and 5 with grouping symbols, like this:

-10 - (3 + 5)

But it didn't.

So, there's two ways of looking at the expression -10 - 3 + 5.

Following the Order of Operations, we would do the subtractions and additions AS THEY OCCUR, moving from left to right.

In other words, start with -10 minus 3, and then add 5 to the result. You'll get -8.

The other viewpoint is to see subtraction as an "abbreviation" of adding signed numbers.

In other words, you have three numbers being ADDED together: negative ten, negative three, and positive 5.

(-10) + (-3) + (5)

The Commutative Property says that we can add numbers in any order we like.

So we could add -3 and 5 first. 5 - 3 = 2

Now add -10 to the result.

-10 + 2 = -8

I strongly suggest that you begin by using the Order of Operations. You need that foundation.
 
OK I JUST LOOKED AND FOUND OUT THAT I HAVE AN ANSWER KEY TO MY REVIEW AND MY TEACHER PUT THE ANSWER -2 BUT I DO SEE WHAT UR TALKIN ABOUT AND I WILL TRY THAT AGAIN THANK U BOTH THIS REALLY HELPED. HOPE THE BOTH OF U HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND

YOU posted this: -10-3+5 ; answer to that is -8

IF answer is -2, then your teacher is wrong and should have given you: -10 - (3+5)

Edit "forced by Sir Khan!": IF answer is -2, then your teacher is wrong and should have given you: -10 + 3 + 5
