i did multiply both sides by cosine. am i right the left hand side 2{cos[arccos(x)]^2 - 1 then the right hand side is 2x-1

Well, we really do not multiply, but using cosine function we get: 2x21=2x1\displaystyle 2x^2-1=2x-1.
Solve that.
