A boat has a speed of 10 mph on still water. A trip of 24 miles upstream and then 24 miles downstream (back to the starting place) takes 12 minutes more than a trip of 48 miles in still water. What is the rate of the current?

(I already figured out that 5 hrs is the total time for both upstream and downstream but I don't know where to go from there)

Set up an equation: time upstream + time downstream = 5h

I don't think that answers the question... I'm trying to find the rate of the current and also the two times would be different in case you were thinking it was 2.5

Did you define a variable, such as x = rate of current?

Then what is the speed of the boat in each direction?
