1) The following list displays the scores of the latest test in Ben Faire's algebra class.

(scores from 54-95).

Draw a graph that you feel best displays the range of scores in B. Faire's algebra class.

2) Refer to the table below which shows the number of active military personnel from 1960-1994 in each branch of the United States armed forces.

Year Army Navy Marines Air Force
1960 873,078 616,987 170,621 814,752
(year interval is 5) (highest is 1,322,548, lowest is 170,621)

Draw a graph that you feel best compares the distribution of military personnel over the branches in 1970 and 1994.

-Basically i wanna know which graph to use for #1, and #2, and how i should set it up (intervals, bottom label, side label)

Q1
Try doing a frequency vs score graph - the y axis will have the frequency of the scores and the x axis the actual score. This graph will show the spread of results.

Q2
y axis with the popluation and x axis with the year.
For this graph to show some improved variation and meaning you couldo start the y axis at a non zero point - this will stretch the variation to show the results "better", or is that "biased".

The actual graph could be presented as a line graph or a bar graph - comes down sometimes to personal choice. i would prefer line graph for Q1 and bar graph for Q2.

thank you so much. but i dunno what intervals to use for teh y axis (side one)

For question 1 ---
the frequency on the y axis vaules will depend on how many results you have.

If the values are from 1- 10 then set this as the range of the y axis.
Can you send the actaul data for me to comment on.

sorry i meant question 2.

Year Army Navy Marines Air Force
1960 873,078 616,987 170,621 814,752
1965 969,066 669,985 190,213 824,662
1970 1,322,548 691,126 259,737 791,349
1975 784,333 535,085 195,951 612,751
1980 777,036 527,153 188,469 557,969
1985 780,787 570,705 198,025 601,515
1990 732,403 579,417 196,652 535,233
1994 541,343 468,662 174,158 426,327

that's the table for it.

ok a few ways to go about this

a bar graph for each 5 year block,
the bar consisting of Army Navy Marines Air Force , in this order. It could be coloured or lined to show the different areas for the different services. But the total height is the combination of all 4.

This will allow you to scan the total service numbers as well as the sub sets.

or....
For each 5 year block draw 4 seperate bars to represent each service value(colour or mark them to make it readable). Repeat this for each 5 year block.... in this case the y axis could start at 100 000 and go to your max.
