which is larger?

It looks like "3/4" takes more ink if you write it with a pen. Is that larger?

Please propose a method for answering this question.

Put both numbers into the same form, and then compare them.

I mean, either write them both as decimals OR write them both as Rational numbers with a common denominator.

EG:

Which is larger? 7/8 or 0.8

Written as decimals, they are 0.875 and 0.800, and we see that 7/8 is larger.

Written as Rational numbers with a common denominator, they are 35/40 and 32/40, and we see that 7/8 is larger.

Thanks for any help with this.

danamiller,

I prefer the methods of mmm4444bot in this thread for this type of problem.

Another way:

(Temporarily ignoring the units), you can write it this way:

\(\displaystyle \frac{3}{4} \ or \ \frac{0.8}{1}\)

Cross-multiply:

\(\displaystyle (3)(1) \ or \ (4)(0.8)\)

\(\displaystyle 3 \ < \ 3.2\)

\(\displaystyle So \ \ \frac{3^"}{4} \ < \ 0.8"\)
