My daughters homework problem that I am stumped on:

Renie gave each of six people 1/10 of a veggie pizza. Renie has 2/5 of the pizza left. Explain how this is true.

Equivalent Fractions a very long time ago, and to be honest I don't think I was too great with it then. Please help???

Six slices (each slice is 1/10th of the pizza) add up to 6/10ths of the pizza.

\(\displaystyle 6 \cdot \frac{1}{10} = \frac{6 \cdot 1}{10} = \frac{6}{10}\)

6/10 can be reduced because 6 and 10 each contain a factor of 2, which cancel.

\(\displaystyle \frac{6}{10} = \frac{2 \cdot 3}{2 \cdot 5} = \frac{3}{5}\)

Therefore, 3/5ths of the pizza was given away.

The whole pizza is expressed as 1.

1 can be written equivalently as 5/5, in order to have a common denominator for subtracting 3/5.

\(\displaystyle \frac{5}{5} - \frac{3}{5} = \frac{5 - 3}{5} = \frac{2}{5}\)

After 3/5ths is taken away, 2/5ths of the pizza remains.
