Isn't total metal in mine #2 just 3,533 so divide that by 8750 = 0.40377142857 x by 100 = 40.377142857%? that's the amount left in the mine?

How did you get that?

I thought that was the amount of metal extracted from mine #2!

Amount "remaining" in ground = (Total amount) - (the amount of metal extracted from mine #2)

I think I'm confusing myself and you. It says 4. Calculate the percentage of silver remaining in the ground after all mining operations ceased. So that implies both mines.
