In a reforestation program, 1400 seedling trees were planted. Twice as many spruce as hemlocks were planted. The number of balsams planted was twenty more than triple the number of hemlocks. How many of each type of seedling was planted?

I dont know where to start :(

WHY do you not know...missed math classes?

Here's a start for you:
h = hemlocks
2h = spruces : "Twice as many spruce as hemlocks"
3h + 20 = balsams : "number of balsams planted was twenty more than triple the number of hemlocks"

So h + 2h + 3h + 20 = 1400
Solve that for h; if you can't, see your teacher...

\(\displaystyle Using \ rref \ (reduced \ row \ echelon \ form) \ we \ get:\)

spruce hemlock balsams

s h b
1 1 1 1400

-1 2 0 0

0 -3 1 20

Hence,
\(\displaystyle Spruce \ = \ 460, \ hemlocks \ = \ 230, \ and \ balsams \ = \ 710.\)

Why are you bringing this in BigG?
The poor girl has no idea how to even get started...
